Each piece of Raku
pottery is
hand-fashioned out of a sand-based clay, baked in a kiln, individually
etched and hand-glazed by an artist. It is then fired at an
extremely
high temperature after which it is placed in sawdust where it
smolders.
This sudden cooling process results in the beautiful and unique
crackled
glaze.
The process is derived
from
an ancient Japanese technique of pottery. The artistic influence
comes from the art of the Ndebeli people of South Africa who are well
known
for the beautiful bright geometric designs they paint on their homes. |
